About me
Harry. E. Benjamin-Laing, BSc(Hons), MBChB(Hons), PGCert, FRCSEd(Tr&Orth)
Hello ๐๐พ,
Thank you for taking the time to read about me.
I am a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon of Ghanaian origin born in the United Kingdom. The majority of my schooling was in the United Kingdom (including an A grade in GCSE Art and Latin).
๐ This was followed by a degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Glasgow and Medicine at the University of Liverpool.
๐ฅ My foundation training in the South East London Deanery was followed by surgical training in the Northwest(Mersey) region. This included a period of clinical research at University College London Hospitals.
I passed the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations in 2021 and achieved my Certificate of Completion of Training(CCT) in 2022. I have been a Consultant since 2023
๐ Whilst looking for an easy way to remember facts for the exams, I came across lots of resources. I found myself converting most of these resources into doodles which I felt were easy to recall. Instead of searching through my notes for these doodles, I decided to make animations of these simple concepts and put them online.
๐ฅ My Youtube channel has over 14000 subscribers in over 100 Countries around the World. I have taught nationally and internationally on examination courses both online and in-person.
๐ฅI have had the privilege of training in some of the Best Orthopaedic units in the United Kingdom and am grateful to the 100s of trainers that have shared their knowledge over the years.
Over the years, many of you have asked about the mindset behind Orthom8 โ the discipline required to sit exams, the resilience needed to keep going when progress feels slow. Iโve started writing about those foundations in a separate project called Average Black Surgeon: Confessions from a Life Misunderstood. The opening chapter, The Long Game, reflects on what training for and running a marathon taught me about surgical training, endurance and refusing to quit. If youโre interested in the thinking behind the work, you can read it here:
The Long game
What a marathon taught me about endurance beyond preparation โ and why surgical training has its own version of mile thirteen.
Now you've learnt about me I'd love to hear from you. DM on LinkedIn if you have any questions for me. I hope you enjoy this content and I look forward to your feedback.
