Orthom8 newsletter #6
👋🏾 Welcome to this edition of the Orthom8 newsletter.
My name is Harry Benjamin-Laing and I'm the founder of Orthom8.
I'm very pleased that you have taken the time to sign up to the membership. I look forward to getting to know you all, interacting and hopefully collaborating.
This newsletter is aimed at those preparing for the FRCS examinations but will be useful for those preparing others for the exam. There is only one outcome we are all interested in and that is an Exam PASS 🥳.
- The website is being updated constantly with fresh new content!
Are you coming up to the FRCS exams in the next 12 months or just want to get organised early? Here's a few things you might be interested in.

Over the years, many of you have asked about the mindset behind Orthom8 — the discipline required to sit exams, the resilience needed to keep going when progress feels slow. I’ve started writing about those foundations in a separate project called Average Black Surgeon: Confessions from a Life Misunderstood. The opening chapter, The Long Game, reflects on what training for and running a marathon taught me about surgical training, endurance and refusing to quit. If you’re interested in the thinking behind the work, you can read it here:
The Long game
What a marathon taught me about endurance beyond preparation — and why surgical training has its own version of mile thirteen.
